Types of DL in India
There are three different types of license s issued in India:
- Learner's license
- Permanent license
- Commercial Driving License
Learner's license :
- The Road Transport Authority (RTA) issues a learner's license to the applicant before giving a permanent driving license . It is valid for up to 6 months. To get this license , the applicant needs to submit valid documents at the RTO and pass a small test.
- During the period of six months, the applicant is expected to polish his driving skills.
- If the applicant still does not feel confident about driving, he can extend his learning license .
- The RTA issues a permanent driving license post the completion learner's license period if the applicant meets the eligibility criteria.
- As per the criteria, the applicant should be 18 years of age and should clear the driving test.
- In case he fails the driving test, he can reappear for it after seven days of time.
Commercial driving license :
This commercial driving license is specifically issued to heavy vehicle drivers such as trucks and delivery vans. The criteria for this are that the applicant ,
- should be 18 years of age or above (some states also keep 20 years as minimum age)
- should be trained either in a government training center or a government-affiliated center,
- should have completed education till 8th grade, has valid documents and already possess a learner's license .
Learning License in MP
In order to drive a vehicle, every person has to hold a valid license. A driving license not only gives its holder a competence certificate but also responsibility regarding driving skills and road rules.The license is valid only for 6 months.
Types of Learner’s License in Madhya Pradesh
A learner's license allows an individual to learn driving either a two-, three-, or four-wheeler. For commercial vehicles, the individual will have to enroll at a motor driving school to learn professional driving. In order to be eligible for a learner's license, the applicant should be at least 16 years old (for private vehicle) or 20 years old (for commercial vehicles).
2. Transport Vehicle: Applicant's opting for commercial or transport vehicle learner's license should be 20 years old. A one year experience of driving a light motor vehicle is a prerequisite. The applicant should also produce a Form 1A, with a medical practitioner's sign.

Pink License Scheme for Women & Girls
Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh in association with various departments like Women and child development, Transport and Education Department has launched a new scheme to uplift women and girl child in MP. This scheme is called the “Pink License Scheme” or “Free License Scheme”. Under this scheme, free driving licenses will be given in pink envelopes to women and girls in MP. The main motive of this scheme is to encourage women to take up driving professionally

Driving License Validity

Renewal of Driving License
Why Should you Renew your Driving License ? / Need of Renewal of DL
As per the Indian Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, it is mandatory for drivers of any vehicle to hold a valid driving license to drive a vehicle on the road.
It is mandatory to renew your license after its expiry because as per the law, in India, you cannot drive any vehicle without a valid driving license.
As per Section 177 of the Motor Act, 1988, driving on public roads without a valid driving license is a punishable offence.
An expired driving license can be renewed within a span of 30 days post expiration, without any fine.
If your driving license has expired more than 30 days ago, you can still renew the same by paying a fine which is calculated from the 31st day after the expiration of the license.
However, this renewal can be done within a period of five years from the date of expiry.
If the license has been initially obtained from another state, then the applicant should furnish a No Objection Certificate (NOC) and confirmation of driving license issued by the original licensing authority.
Documents Required to Apply for Renewal of Driving License
You will be required to submit a few documents as per the prescription of the Regional Transport Office (RTO). These documents can be summed up as follows:
- Duly filled up Form 9. The form can be availed from the local RTO or downloaded from the official website.
- Duly filled up Form 1 and Form 1- A. Form 1 is a declaration of the applicant‟s physical fitness and Form 1- A is a medical certificate by a medical practitioner. These forms can be availed from the local RTO or downloaded from the official website.
- Your previous driving license.
- Proof of age and address such as passport, PAN card, and so on.
- 3 recent passport-sized photographs
- For commercial and transport vehicles, you will be required to submit the Driver Refreshing Certificate in addition to the documents mentioned above.

Suspension of Driving License
According to 2016 amendment of Indian Motor Vehicle Act 1988, in certain situations a Driver's License may be suspended. So always follow the rules and drive carefully, if you don't want to be left without Driving License even temporarily.
Situations for Driving License Suspension
Your Driving License is liable for suspension by a minimum of 3 months‟ duration; under following circumstances.
- Driving beyond the designated Speed Limit for a Vehicle Category or violation of Traffic Signaling System.
- Overloading of Commercial Transport Vehicle or plying passengers with a Commercial Goods Carrier.
- Driving under Alcoholic or any other Narcotic/Psychotropic Substance Influence.
- Usage of Mobile Phone while driving.
Process to get back Suspended License
In case of your driving license suspension, the dedicated Police Authority can confiscate(forcedly taken) your Driving License and issue a receipt against the same. The receipt of License suspension clearly states the cause of suspension and dedicated
R.T.O. details for resolution of the case. The confiscated license is then forwarded to the issuing R.T.O of your License.Related R.T.O issues a 'Show Cause notice' in your name against suspension. After 3 months (or designated suspension timeline) of submitting a satisfactory response for the "Show Cause Notice", you may collect your license by producing the Suspension Receipt to the R.T.O.
Revocation/Cancellation of Driving License
Revocation of driving license on grounds of disease or disability – A licensing authority may at any time revoke or cancel a driving license by virtue of any disease or disability, unfit to drive a motor vehicle ( under section 16)
